Windows Vista Stuck in loop Configuring updates Stage 3

Solution Windows Vista can get stuck in a loop of "Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3 0% completes", then rebooting and "Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3 0% completes" again.

This is a fault with SP1 update trying to install when a prerequesite update KB937287 has not been installed.

This only applies to Vista, i have written another artical for XP on Reinitilizing the Windows Update database which corrects most issues with Windows Update on XP.

*** Resolution ***

To resolve the problem

1. Reboot the pc and if prompted choose the "Repair your computer" option on startup, alternatively use the F8 button when the computer starts this should bring the same menu, alternatively boot from the windows vista disk choose next and repair.

2. Once booted into repair use the system restore option, choose a date before the last time it was working. As a rule of thumb I always go back a week more just to be sure. This should get you back into windows.

3. If step 2 fails, repeat step 1, and insted of step 2 choose the command window option. type del %windir%\winsxspending.xml, you may need to alter file premissions to let you delete. Once complete, type exit and click reboot.

4. Once in windows goto http://download.microsoft.com and search for KB937287 download and install this, then you should be certain the problem won't happen again.
